Creating and Managing Effective Teams

Course objectives & who will benefit from this course:

Organisations are full of teams at all levels of operation. Those teams are often small, their composition sometimes changes regularly, and they are always responsible for the provision of key services. Good teams are important because they can achieve and deliver more than the sum of their individuals can ever do.

Unfortunately for most Housing Associations, as well as any other organisations, the reality is that perfectly functioning and effective teams often remain an unrealised goal. Many teams fail to achieve high performance or to add value to the organisation. And often they are the source of frustration and unhappiness for individual employees (and managers).

However, developing better teams is actually quite simple, although it takes time and commitment from the people involved. The secret of success is attending to the root causes of any problems – like lack of trust and dysfunctional relationships – as the first step to improving team morale and working relationships. The second step is to develop the team’s 'team-working' abilities in relation to their actual work tasks.

The aim of this 3-week course is to prepare participants to master these two steps. By the end of the course Managers will be able to:

  • Understand team dynamics and the characteristics of highly effective teams
  • Understand the role of the team-leader
  • Carry out a basic assessment of the team they manage, including its members and their roles, the team's purpose and its challenges
  • Know how to select further appropriate team-assessment tools and methods
  • Diagnose basic team 'dysfunctions'
  • Diagnose personal development needs for managing teams effectively
  • Develop a team-development action plan

How much time will it take to participate?

Participants should allow an average of 3 hours per week for taking part in the course, spread over the whole week (at a rate of about 40 minutes per day), and not in one block. Much of the learning takes place through activities that build on each other, and through discussions and interaction with fellow participants and tutors. Continual involvement between Monday and Friday is therefore important.

What are the costs?

£160 per participant and course.
