Who I am

My background includes a variety of roles within the Court Service, housing management, supported housing, rent recovery, homelessness, landlord & tenant, floating support, welfare rights, debt and money advice. I have carried out these roles in capacities varying from a voluntary worker, though to specialist level casework and representation under a legal aid franchise.

I am also a qualified, skilled and experienced Trainer, and for the last ten years have been delivering training in the above areas, as well as “skills courses” (particularly communication, advice, negotiation, advocacy and representation skills).

My training is relaxed and informal, encouraging and relying on participation in order that I can ensure participants’ needs are met and that the training is a positive and learning experience for all, including myself. I use my own experiences as a front-line worker, and those of other participants, to ensure that all my training is practical, so that you will gain something from it that you can actually use in your everyday work.

The following two comments summarise my training style:

A comment from me: “There is no such thing as a stupid question”
A comment from a participant: “You brought the law to life!”

My personal and career experiences, combined with the many groups and individuals I have worked with, demonstrate my personal commitment to working towards equality and valuing diversity.

My expertise and experience

In addition to working with LearnHousing I am also an Associate Trainer for several national training providers, covering areas including housing, landlord & tenant, homelessness, welfare rights, debt & money advice, as well as the skills training I have already described. I also provide training though a local Supporting People umbrella organisation whose many members across Hampshire, Dorset and Sussex make up organisations varying from Local Authorities and large social housing providers through to small local charitable and voluntary agencies.

Previous clients include: Bournemouth Churches Housing Association, Connexions, Fareham Borough Council, Gosport Borough Council, Hampshire Social Services, Hyde Housing Association, MIND, National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux, Shelter’s National Homelessness Advice Service, Women’s Aid, as well as smaller local organisations working with specific client groups / issues such as: former offenders, substance dependency, sickness and disability, mental health, street homelessness, learning disabilities and young people.

My courses @ LearnHousing

At LearnHousing I will mainly be involved in the design and delivery of e-learning and blended learning events covering the main areas of housing-related subjects particularly useful to front-line workers, at both foundation and advanced levels. As “appetisers” the first courses to be available though LearnHousing will be:

  • Housing Status & Security of Tenure
  • Homelessness: Law & Practise
  • Allocation of Social Housing
Check out the course information pages for more details and booking information. Don’t forget to check back regularly as more courses are added!

What else I can offer you

  • Face-to-face training courses - from half a day to two days, either from a selection of existing courses, or tailored to suit your requirements.
  • Face-to-face briefing sessions (1-3 hours) – looking at a specific issue or area of your choice. These are particularly suitable for incorporation into staff meetings or as a half-day course.
  • Briefing packs – written materials covering a specific issue or area, or new developments. These are suitable for use by individuals or several staff members to give relevant information on the subject at a time that suits you. Particularly useful where logistics or time constraints prevent a face-to-face briefing session.
  • Consultancy and Casework Support – for specific advice or guidance on an individual case basis. This can be carried out by telephone, post or email. (All cases receive a written confirmation of advice).
  • Mystery Shopping” – ever wondered how your organisation is viewed by those who come into contact with it? From telephone to personal contact, I can offer an unbiased and independent assessment of a “customer” experience. Needs and methods are fully discussed and agreed in advance and a report provided once the survey is complete. Particularly useful for those preparing for reviews or inspections, or simply to get an independent perspective.
Fees are negotiable and based on an “all-inclusive” basis. Special rates apply for organisations subscribing at least one staff member to any LearnHousing Course.

I am very happy to discuss your specific needs and work with you to ensure you get the learning solutions you require. Although based on the South Coast I regularly travel to all parts of the UK and can deliver courses at any location.
