Course description:
This course offers a practical, user-friendly introduction to housing legislation relating to rented accommodation, covering social housing and the private rented sector.
The course will equip participants with the skills and knowledge to identify an occupier’s tenancy status in order that they can establish the occupier’s rights, responsibilities and security of tenure.
The course also provides an in-depth look at the required processes for landlords wishing to reclaim possession of property, utilising relevant documents and identifying the options and arguments both landlord and tenant can use throughout this process.
Course aims:
To provide participants with a practical working knowledge of different tenants’ rights and responsibilities, the security of their tenure, and the processes required to take possession of a tenant’s home.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the type of tenancy (housing status) an occupier has.
- Identify the basic rights and security of tenure afforded to each type of tenant.
- Understand the legal process required to take possession action for rented accommodation.
- Be familiar with the documents commonly used in possession proceedings.
- Identify options and actions that can be taken at each stage of the possession process.
Who will benefit from taking part:
This course is suitable for those working with or on behalf of both landlords and tenants. It is particularly suitable for people working in areas such as Housing Management, Rent Arrears and Tenancy Support / Sustainment as well as those who are involved in Homelessness Prevention Work and anyone with a general interest in housing issues
Skill / Knowledge Pre-Requisites:
The course is ideal as an introduction to housing legislation and procedures for new staff or as a refresher course. Participants do not need prior experience in this area.
Technical Pre-Requisites:
No additional hardware required other than standard pre-requisites.
Participants will need Adobe Reader Software installed on their computer to view and utilise certain documents.
Where Next?
On completion of this course participants will have developed confidence and skills to utilise in their everyday work. Participants may feel equipped to carry out activities relating to possession action. (It is recommended that participants involved in court proceedings go on to undertake advanced training in this area – contact LearnHousing if you would like details of available training).
This course provides the recommended foundation-level knowledge in relation to Housing Status and Security of Tenure to allow access to more specialist or advanced courses both within LearnHousing and from other training providers.
How much time will it take to participate?
The course runs over a period of 6 weeks and participants should allow an average of 3-4 hours per week for taking part in the course. A dedicated course tutor will work with participants in establishing a work plan that enables learners to combine learning time with their work.
What are the costs?
For the pilot run of the course we are offering a reduced rate of £160 per learner, which is a discount of around 30% on normal rates.
