The Social Housing
Compass - delivered to your organisation off-line & face-to-face
SPECIAL OFFER: Until 30 April 2006 we will offer this course at a special introductory rate rate of £600.
Is e-learning not right for you right now? Choose our 'face-to-face' delivery instead!
We now also offer The Social Housing Compass course as a 'traditional' on-site and in-house training workshop, delivered face-to-face in just one day. This is particularly useful for organisations who would like several staff- or Board-members to take the course at the same time.
The approach & focus
The workshop adopts the same approach as the online version - a strong focus on enabling participants to learn the basics of Social Housing in the current economic and political context, whilst becoming equipped to continue their exploration and learning on their own after the course, using freely available information sources.
Content & course objectives:
During the course, learners will be provided with key information about the history of Social Housing, its functions, structures and key players, current issues and latest developments. Issues to be looked into will include:
- Basic Social Housing jargon
- How Social Housing developed
- Current status and role of Social Housing
- How Housing Associations are structured and how they function
- Difference and relationship between local authority Social Housing and Housing Associations (including stock transfer)
- Key players in the Social Housing sector
- Current political circumstances that influence Social Housing
- Social housing funding & new developments
- Burning issues in Social Housing
- Where to find further information on Social Housing and how to use it effectively
What you get - more than just one day
With this version of The Social Housing Compass workshop you will get more than just a trainer showing up on your door-step and talking to people for a day. We really want to provide a programme that meets the particular requirements of your organisation and the participants - which is why we will find out beforehand what your needs are, so that we can tailor the content and structure of the workshop accordingly. And as there is not that much time in a day, we will be making sure that participants take something away that they can use until they are really proficient in understanding what is happening in Social Housing and how it related to their organisation.
In order to achieve this we do three things:
1. A pre-course assessment consisting of two main parts:
- a short questionnaire to establish the background, current role and learning needs of people
- a short anonymous form where people can indicate what they want to find out and learn, including 'stupid questions'. The 'anonymous' question is something that works extremely well in the online course. People are often very shy about asking some basic questions (even worse in an in-house course where colleagues or even managers may be present), but if those questions are not answered then they create major barriers to understanding the key issues. If we know those questions in advance we can integrate the answers into the workshop without embarrassing anybody.
The above information will be collected via an online survey - but hard-copy alternatives can be provided for those without Internet access. In addition, we will ask you to provide some key information about your organisation (Annual report, etc.) so we can take your particular situation into account.
2. Participants will receive a short hard-copy summary of the course AND a full set of all the up-to-date INFO MODULES from The Social Housing Compass e-learning version on a CD-Rom. This material amounts to about 80 A4 pages, including a comprehensive list of all the most relevant housing information sources.
3. All participants will receive free membership of the 'Compass Community' in LearnHousing's Virtual Learning Centre - an online community where all those who completed the course, either online or off-line, can communicate and engage with each other, and where they will continue to receive recommendations for future learning and valuable information resources.
What will happen on the day
We will liaise with clients to agree the start and finish time of a workshop, and its overall duration. In general a workshop would run for about 8 hours, including lunch and coffee breaks.
The workshop is interactive and participative, including small group activities. We will also be using a variety of up-to-date and relevant information resources, such as articles from the general and housing press, local material (like Local Authority housing material) and similar resources. In Social Housing there are always important things happening - so we'll make sure that whatever is a hot issue will be addressed during the course.
If the group of participants is mixed and includes staff, Board members and/or residents, then we will also use this mix effectively by facilitating interaction between the groups, so that they can learn from each other about their roles and challenges.
What the costs are
SPECIAL OFFER: Until 30 April 2006 we will offer this course at a special introductory rate rate of £600.
We offer this course at £750 per workshop (travel expenses to be paid on top) - for between 6 and 12 participants. This includes all the pre-assessments as well as the information material provided at the end of the course. If you have fewer participants, or more, then please contact us for a discussion about how to accommodate this and find out about pricing and logistics.
How this compares to other providers
Housing trainers usually offer 'off the shelf' Introduction courses for anything from £400 upwards. As you will appreciate from the above information our approach is far more hands-on and tailor-made, so when pricing this product we need to take into account the special preparation that is required.
At £750 we still think this is excellent value for money - providing a high-quality in-house course that costs conisderably less per participant than if they were sent to open access courses.
Who will benefit from this course
- Social Housing providers
- Organisations involved with Social Housing (like private developers)
